Terminus Nord: the brasserie you spot before you even leave Gare du Nord
Just cross the street, and you're there. Terminus Nord is located directly across from Gare du Nord. For those arriving via Eurostar from Amsterdam, the station itself isn't exactly inviting. Terminus Nord provides the perfect excuse to linger for a moment. I've been doing it for years, going both ways.
If the train arrives around noon, departing from Amsterdam at nine, I head straight in for lunch. Oysters, French onion soup, a glass of wine. In just ten minutes, you escape the station's hustle into an art-deco room adorned with mirrors, mosaic floors, and stained glass that perfectly captures the light, instantly reminding you: Paris. The city starts here, not on the Champs-Élysées.
Terminus Nord is the loveliest brasserie near Gare du Nord: attention to detail
Terminus Nord has been around since 1925, and it looks the part. And that’s a compliment. No renovation has stripped it of its soul; the interior remains the same. Waiters in black-and-white uniforms, tables set close together, the murmur of travelers arriving or departing (yes, with rolling suitcases). The staff is quick and attentive, as you'd expect from a brasserie in this location.
The menu is classic French with no frills: oysters, steak frites, escargots, confit de canard. The oysters are fresh daily, just what you want after a three-hour train ride. The onion soup is the comforting dish you order nowhere else like you do in Paris.
Breakfast is worth it too
For those departing Paris early in the morning, here's another reason to stop by. For 8 euros, you can have a breakfast menu (croissant, fresh juice, coffee). Simple, good, hassle-free. If you’re catching a train at eight, this is the perfect start you need. We did it on the return trip and would do it again in a heartbeat.
The brasserie is open daily from 7:00 AM to 11:00 PM, making it convenient for early birds and late arrivals alike.
Bouillon Chartier: a good option a little further on
If you're looking to spend a bit less or have more time: Bouillon Chartier is a 10-minute walk away. An authentic bouillon, steak frites for ten euros, always bustling and just a bit chaotic. Certainly not a bad choice, but different from Terminus Nord. If you’ve just arrived by train and have your suitcase with you, Terminus Nord’s location wins hands down.
