When staying in Rome, the neighborhood influences your city trip more than you might think. A hotel may seem central on the map, but you could still be half an hour away from the dining area you desire. For a first visit, I recommend looking at Monti, Trastevere, and the historic center (Centro Storico). If you want to stay close to the Vatican, then Prati makes sense. Testaccio is ideal if you already know Rome or are there for great food.

Monti: My Favorite for a First City Trip
Monti is the neighborhood I most often recommend for a first visit. It is right next to the Colosseum and the Roman Forum, and the historic center is within walking distance. But what sets Monti apart from a purely central hotel is the atmosphere you’ll find upon returning in the evening: quirky little restaurants, coffee shops, and wine bars that you’d read about in a good article rather than on a road sign.
The Via Leonina, Via Panisperna, and Piazza della Madonna dei Monti are the heart of the district. Metro stop Colosseo is within walking distance. The only downside is that Monti is becoming increasingly popular, sometimes making the neighborhood busier than a few years ago.

My Favorite Hotels in Monti
Domus Suites Colosseum is near the Colosseum and is especially interesting if you want to combine major attractions on foot with Monti's restaurants. The suites offer more space than a standard hotel room. Prices from 210,- per night.
CC Palace is a spacious hotel with a restaurant and a rooftop terrace. It’s less boutique than Domus Suites, good for those who don't mind a larger hotel and want the atmosphere of Monti with a bar or lounge. Prices from 245 euros per night.
Fifteen Keys is the most beautiful boutique hotel I know in Rome. A small patio, and a beautifully styled lobby with a bar. Located in the center of Monti. Prices from 285 euros per night.
Trastevere: Staying Among Restaurants and Roman Streets
Trastevere is at its best in the evenings. The streets light up, the terraces fill, and the district gains an energy not found as much in other neighborhoods. This is also its downside: popular areas can be noisy at night. Light sleepers might prefer a quieter street.
Getting to the historic center requires a bit more effort than from Monti. This isn’t a huge problem, but something to keep in mind for a short city trip. For those who prioritize dining and evening atmosphere over the shortest route to the Trevi Fountain, Trastevere is the logical choice.

Santa Maria has a courtyard, which is not a luxury in this district. Quieter than other Trastevere addresses, for those wanting the neighborhood’s vibe but also a good night’s sleep. Prices from 220,- per night.
Divine B&B is more intimate and personal than Santa Maria. More of a B&B feel, less of a hotel. Breakfast is at a nearby café. Good for those preferring a smaller property. Prices from 140,- per night.
Tree Charm Trilussa is across from Piazza Trilussa, on the edge of the Tiber. It’s centrally located in Trastevere and provides easy access to Campo de' Fiori. Prices from 280,- per night.

Centro Storico: Ideal If You Want to Walk Everywhere
Centro Storico is the choice for those who want minimal walking distance: Pantheon, Piazza Navona, Trevi Fountain, and the Spanish Steps are all relatively close. For a short city trip where you want to see as much as possible without the metro, this is a logical choice.
The trade-off: higher hotel prices, more crowds, and a daytime environment that’s more touristy than Monti or Testaccio. The restaurants around the main squares aren't automatically the city’s best. If you stay here, it’s wise to venture a few streets away for dining.

Casacau is a small, meticulously designed spot in the heart of the historic center. For those choosing Centro Storico but wanting the feel of a boutique hotel instead of a larger, anonymous address. Apartments from 450,- per night.
Hotel La Place offers a more classic atmosphere, with more space and organized hotel experience. Suitable for those wanting to combine the location of Centro Storico with more comfort and service. Prices from 275,- per night.
Tree Charme Parliament is close to the Pantheon. A truly superb location. A more personal alternative to the big hotels in the center, for those wanting to sleep close to the attractions. Prices from 245,- per night.
Vatican and Prati: Quieter Stay on the Other Side of the Tiber
Prati borders the Vatican directly. Its broader avenues and somewhat calmer atmosphere make it a different Rome compared to the historic center. Those staying here have St. Peter’s Square and the Vatican Museums nearby. With Metro Line A and bridges over the Tiber, you're relatively quick to other parts of the center.
The evening life is less concentrated here than in Trastevere or Monti, making Prati quieter but also a little less lively if you spontaneously head out at night. I would choose this if the Vatican is the main reason for your visit.
My Favorite Hotels Near the Vatican
The Place 217 (**) is a boutique hotel with only 5 rooms. Small-scale and stylish on Via Cola di Rienzo, within walking distance of the Vatican. For those intentionally choosing Prati and not wanting a big hotel. Prices from 180,- per night.
Eleganti Quadrilocale is a short walk from the Vatican. This stunning apartment has 2 bedrooms and 1 bathroom, great for a family or 2 couples. Prices from 245,- per night.
Mama Shelter is a kilometer from Vatican City. The rooftop terrace, sauna, and pool are great extras. Mama Shelter is always a good idea for those on a smaller budget. It’s just a little further from the center. Prices from 185,- per night.
Always buy your tickets for the Vatican Museums and the Sistine Chapel online in advance. You can also book a guided tour including tickets, which is definitely worth it in high season.
Testaccio: For Those Who Want to Eat Really Well
Testaccio is the district for those who have visited Rome before and now want more of a local vibe. Traditional trattorias, a good market, and shops not primarily aimed at tourists. For a first visit where you want to cover the major classics, Testaccio is less practical logistically. But for those who know Rome: this is where I’d send you. My Favorite Hotels in Testaccio
Seven Suites offers suites instead of standard hotel rooms, giving more space and a personal feel. The most refined address of the three, for those choosing Testaccio intentionally. Prices from 185,- per night.
La Corte dei Panni is small-scale and intimate, with a character matching the neighborhood. Less for those who want maximum hotel experience, more for those who want to sleep close to Testaccio's daily life. Prices from 180,- per night.
Casa Valentina is the most personal of the three. Ideal for a shorter stay where Testaccio is a conscious choice. Near the train station, convenient from the airport. Prices from 140,- per night.
So: Where Would I Stay in Rome?
If it were my first city trip to Rome, I would choose Monti. The combination of location, ambiance, and restaurant options is unparalleled. I’d choose Trastevere when dining and nightlife outweigh logistical efficiency. Centro Storico if I had three days and wanted to walk as little as possible or think about transport. I’d save Testaccio for when I already know Rome well.
