The restaurant alone is a reason to visit. I savored Chicken Apaki, a locally smoked dish, surrounded by fresh veggies and salads from the estate. Fresh, honest, and just perfect after a day’s hike. Prices are around 100 euros per night in July, quite reasonable if you’re used to southern France.
Monasteriako Giannoudi: An Old Monastery Run by a Dutchwoman
Monasteriako Giannoudi is a former monastery near Rethymno, managed by Syl, a Dutchwoman who knows what guests need. The apartments are spacious, there’s a communal pool, and breakfast is superb. Dinner, vegetarian and fresh, is available upon request. Great location: plenty to explore for days. A car is essential for Rethymno. Prices are around 100 euros per night. For a night out nearby: Ba Raki in Rethymno for the ambiance and food, or Klapsinos Taverna by the beach, a family-run spot where the mother cooks and her sons serve. Delicious fresh fish.
Kapsaliana Village Resort: A Village Transformed into a Luxury Hotel
Kapsaliana Village Resort is a labor of love. An architect purchased an abandoned village near Rethymno and meticulously restored it into a hotel with spacious, luxurious rooms and lovely spots across the grounds. The food is excellent, and the location is perfect. From here, explore the Arkadi Monastery, one of Crete’s most beautiful sites, and the pottery village Margarites. Or take a sunset 4x4 safari. For dinner: Akrogiali Tavern by the beach, affordable Greek food with sunset views. Hotel prices around 280 euros per night in July.
Boutique Hotel Crete: Stay in Chania's Venetian Town
Casa Delfino is in the historic Venetian town of Chania and has been in the same family for six generations. The building is beautiful, the rooms are spacious, and the location allows you to explore on foot. Chania offers much: boat trips, beaches, charming streets and shops. For dining: restaurant Pallas for the view, Chrisostomos for local cuisine, or Salis for a culinary evening with a fine wine list. Casa Delfino is the priciest option in this list, with prices around 300 euros per night in July.
Elounda Infinity Resort: Serenity and Romance by the Bay
Elounda Infinity Resort (adults only) is situated by the bay of Elounda in east Crete, popular among couples and babymooners. Beautiful pool, tranquility, and a setting perfect for relaxation. A car is necessary, but the area rewards it: the port of Elounda and nearby village Plaka offer great local restaurants with fresh fish and Greek cuisine. Vritomartes in Elounda for fresh fish with a view, Ocean Restaurant in Plaka for the atmosphere of a small Greek village. For a day on the water: boat trip to Spinalonga island from Elounda with barbecue is recommended. Prices around 280 euros per night in July.
