Hemingway dined here. Picasso too. Josephine Baker left her dancing shoes under the tables. The walls know more than they tell, and you can feel it.

La Coupole opened in 1927 and looks just the same. Art-deco at its finest: marble, mosaic, painted columns, and a dome capturing daylight beautifully. My favorite table is in the middle by those columns, a bit central with a great view. The staff recognizes regulars, there’s always a joke, and outside on the terrace, you sit among Parisians who aren't in a rush. But inside holds the true charm.

The gratinated mussels. Creamy, garlic, parsley, so delightful I've ordered them as a main more than once without hesitation. The menu also offers everything a classic Parisian brasserie should: onion soup, oysters on ice, steak tartare, and a seafood platter that will make your dining partner envious. Prices aren't the lowest in Paris, but the value is there. Fresh ingredients, swift service, and a unique atmosphere.
