1. Figueres and the Dalí Museum
Figueres is 138 kilometers from Barcelona, about an hour and a half by train. The draw? A single building: the Teatro-Museo Dalí, designed by Salvador Dalí himself, doubling as his tomb and his greatest artwork. From the outside, the building is an experience on its own with egg ornaments on the roof and a vivid red façade. Inside, it's literally surreal: you never quite know what you're seeing or if you're seeing it right. Book your ticket online as the lines can be long. The town of Figueres itself is also worth a stroll.
2. Montserrat
Montserrat is the mountain that greets you as you step off the train, looking northward. At 56 kilometers from Barcelona, it rises from the landscape with its distinctive jagged ridge. The ancient monastery atop draws both pilgrims and tourists. Take the cable car or cogwheel train up, where you can also wander trails with views that defy explanation. Castelldefels, 21 kilometers south of Barcelona, offers something the city doesn't: a long, wide beach without too much hustle. Castelldefels is flatter than most of Catalonia, making biking easy. Perfect for a relaxed day out, even with children, and great for a beach visit.
