It depends on what you find important. For restaurants, streets, and walking back to your hotel at night, the old town is handy. If you prefer to be close to the sea, look towards the Promenade des Anglais.

For a long weekend, I would stay three nights in Nice. It's easy to fly to, and the tram takes you directly from the airport to the city. With three nights, you have enough time for Vieux Nice, the beach, good food, and the main spots without turning your weekend into one long checklist.
